“ Because CloudTV supports an HTML5, cloud-based UI, Ziggo is able to add functionality or change the UI literally overnight. Compared to normal change cycles of several months on STBs, this is a game-changing innovation. ”
- Eric Meijer, Ziggo
Ziggo pioneered the concept of using virtualized set-top box functionality to bring to set-top boxes and other devices without browsers the rich, uniform user interfaces needed for on-demand services and its “TV Gemist” catch-up service.
Working with ActiveVideo, Ziggo developed a solution that eliminated significant technology obstacles, including lack of CPU and memory resources in subscriber-owned Ziggo STBs, fragmentation of various STB makes and models and other considerations.
Ziggo used ActiveVideo’s CloudTV platform to create a virtual STB that enables user experiences to be rendered in the cloud and delivered as a video stream to any STB or connected device, including customer-owned CI Plus modules. A UI written in HTML5 runs on a web server but is delivered via the managed cable network, ensuring the highest levels of service quality.
Available to approximately 350,000 customers at launch in 2013, the service immediately contributed to year-over-year increases of more than 50% in on-demand usage and more than 9% in digital pay-TV ARPU.
