IBC Innovation Award Caps a September to Remember
We’ve had one great September at ActiveVideo. Endorsements by T-Labs, the R&I arm of Deutsche Telekom, and Liberty Global. Selection by Light Reading as one of the leading private companies. A Best Exhibit Design Award for our stand at IBC.
This week marked yet another leap forward for validation of our technology. At the IBC Innovation Awards, against entries from around the world, a groundbreaking Ziggo service -- made possible by our CloudTV™ software platform -- received a Finalist Award in the Content Delivery category. It was well-deserved recognition of how Ziggo and ActiveVideo are working together to create new paradigms in TV content delivery. Here’s that story:
Ever since we began working with Ziggo, we’ve respected their pioneering spirit. We’re proud to have helped them create the service that was a finalist last night -- the world’s first interactive HTML5-based service to STBs that lack modern browsers. They’ve also been leading the industry in the broad acceptance of CI Plus, which allows more than a million homes in the Netherlands to consume digital TV services without the need for a separate STB.
When we first discussed with them how CloudTV™ could help them enable rich HTML5-based interactive services on their broad spectrum of devices - from older set-top boxes to the newest TVs - the Ziggo team quickly embraced its potential. We worked closely with Ziggo and its many eco-system partners to launch the new services in March of this year.
Since the launch, Ziggo's new interactive services based on CloudTV have exceeded expectations in customer uptake. On its Q2 2013 earnings call, Ziggo said that 150,000 digital receivers – a 150% increase over Q1 totals -- already had been activated, and that overall VOD usage was up 56% year-over-year. Speaking for the Brockmann family, I can say that we’re spending more time than ever with Ziggo’s broad offering of entertainment for our kids and ourselves ;-)
By moving the UI out of the STB and into the cloud, CloudTV has provided Ziggo with the flexibility it needs to release significant enhancements quickly, including an upgrade to the user experience within a couple of months of initial launch. That’s a record speed for the pay-TV industry.
In the future, Ziggo will be able to bring more rich services to more types of devices. We look forward to working with them to make those visions a reality, and to capturing top honors in the 2014 IBC Innovation Awards.
